The Young People’s Philharmonic of the Lehigh Valley offers opportunities for students to study chamber music, which is  music written for four or five unique musical instruments, one player to each part. In rehearsals, student groups work with a coach to learn the music, however, performances are given without  a conductor and players must rely on their own preparation and each other to stay together.

Because there is only one musician per part, participating students must be able to attend all rehearsals and concerts, since the group cannot learn or perform without all players present.
Each year, the following instrument group configurations are offered:

String Quartet: 2 Violins, Viola, Cello
Michael Jorgensen & Sharon Fischer, Coaches

Brass Quintet: 2 Trumpets, French Horn, Trombone, Tuba
Lawrence Wright, Coach

Woodwind Quintet: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Basson, French Horn
Robin Kani, Coach

The number of each group in the program changes from year to year depending on student interest and availability.  Students audition for coaches in the spring and specific group schedules are formed and solidified over the summer and into the fall.

Chamber Player groups typically meet for 15 rehearsals between October and May and all groups participate in the All Chamber concert in the spring.  Groups also engage in several outreach and community performances throughout the year.

Chamber music requires an advanced level of musical focus and student interaction.  Studying it promotes collaboration, leadership, responsibility and performance skills.  Young musicians can acquire advanced listening skills, fine tune their intonation and nonverbal communication skills, and develop an appreciation for musical complexity.

YPP Chamber Player coaches are professional music educators who have advanced experience in music education and performance.  Because groups are small, students receive a high level of individual attention.
