Audition Information

The YPPLV will be accepting audition applications through the summer and beginning of fall!

All auditions will be held virtually. You will be able to send a video for your audition. 

If you’d like to audition, please fill out an Audition Registration Form.  Once registered, our general manager will be in touch with all info needed for preparing for your audition. If you have any questions, please feel free to email directly at:  gm@ypplv.org

Returning Students are not required to re-audition, unless you are moving up from JSP to YPP.  However, you must fill out and submit a Returning Student Registration Form.

String AuditionsSTRING AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

1) ONE three-octave scale in a MAJOR key. This should be played with separate bows in 16th notes at Quarter Note=60
2) ONE three-octave scale in a MINOR key. This should be played with 4 quarter notes slurred per bow at Quarter Note=60
3) A solo work of your choice (no piano accompaniment, please)
4) The excerpt from Mendelssohn Symphony No. 4 that we have provided for your instrument. See below for the excerpt links.

Wind candidatesWind candidates should be prepared to:

  1. Play their own selection from the solo repertoire
  2. Prepare 2 scales in 2 octaves, preferably one major scale and one minor scale.

  3. Play the chosen excerpt that we have provided for your instrument. Please find the link below.

In addition:

  • Flute students will be asked to play a C Major scale in 3 octaves, and should be able to play or be willing to learn to play piccolo. If the student does play piccolo, please bring the instrument to the audition and be prepared to play a short solo or orchestral excerpt and scales.
  • Oboe students should play or be willing to learn to play English horn. If the student does play English horn, please bring the instrument to the audition and be prepared to play a short solo or orchestral excerpt and scales.
  • Clarinet students should be willing to learn A clarinet.

The chosen excerpt will be Bizet-Carmen Suite No 1, mvmt 5 Les Toreadors, D to the end.

 
 
 

 

Brass CandidatesBrass candidates should be prepared to:

  1. Play their own selection from the solo repertoire
  2. Prepare 2 scales in 2 octaves, one major scale and one minor scale.
  3. Play the chosen excerpt that we have provided for your instrument. Please find the link below.
  • Horn students should have begun to learn transposition.
  • Trumpet students must have a Bb trumpet and, if possible, have access to a C trumpet and should have begun to learn transposition.
  • Trombone students must be able to read bass and should have begun to learn tenor clef.

Percussion CandidatesPercussion candidates should be prepared to:

  1. Prepare a snare drum solo and/or timpani solo (if accessible)
  2. Play the chosen excerpt that we have provided for your instrument. Please find the link below.
  • Should have begun learning mallet percussion. If you have begun learning mallet percussion you will be asked to play 4 octaves in a major scale
  • Should be comfortable playing aux percussion

Please be sure to complete your solo, and scales in the same video. See below for complete instructions.

Please make sure your instrument can be seen clearly in the video you are submitting. The director must be able to see your hands and the entire instrument in the recording. 

When setting up for the video recording, it is best not to be too far away from the mic source or too close; 5 or 6 feet away should be fine.

Results will be announced within the 2 weeks following the submission deadline.

Junior String Philharmonic

(Grades 5 through 9)

Junior String Candidates

  • One flat key and one sharp key
  • Must be able to play a minimum of 2 octaves

Each applicant will perform a solo piece of their choice.

Music SheetApplicants must be able to shift and read comfortably into Third Position and use vibrato as minimum requirements. It is important that students participate in their school ensembles as well as JSP if accepted.

Brass and Woodwind Candidates

– Scales – Minimum of Concert Bb, Eb, F and C in two octaves and chromatic one octave

– Director choses one scale/student choses the second scale

– All instruments play the chromatic scale

– Solo Piece – Student’s choice 

– Sight reading – The student should be prepared to play a level-appropriate excerpt supplied by the director.

Battery (snare & bass drum as well as auxiliary)

  1. Demonstration of basic rudiments from 26 Standard American Drum Rudiments
  2. Solo Piece – Student’s choice 
  3. Sight reading – Short excerpt supplied by the director

Mallets

  1. Scales – Minimum of Concert Bb, Eb, F and C in two octaves and chromatic one octave
    1. Director choses one scale/student choses the second scale
    2. All instruments play the chromatic scale
  2. Demonstrate ability to produce a roll with good tone
  3. Solo Piece – Student’s choice 
  4. Sight reading – Short excerpt supplied by the director

Chamber Players CandidatesFor technical guidelines, students grades 9-12 should refer to the YPP Audition Requirements; string players grades 5-8 should refer to the JSP Audition Requirements.

 

  • String players in grades 5-9, register for a JSP audition time
  • String, woodwind & brass players in grades 9-12, register for a YPP audition time.

Annual Tuition

Annual tuition for The Young People’s Philharmonic, Junior String Philharmonic and YPP Wind Symphony is $600 per student and $400 for each additional sibling.

Annual Tuition for the YPP Chamber Players is $600. Chamber player tuition for orchestra participants is $500.

Financial Assistance is Available.  The deadline for applications is July 1st.
